SOPA - Tale of the Stolen Potato is a Cute Little Adventure but It Can Be a Bit Clunky
Who doesn’t love a hearty potato soup? Especially during the winter time when you feel like you need something to really warm your bones. And SOPA - Tale of the Stolen Potato really makes players feel protective of the beautiful food that is the potato. And main character Miho is determined to get his stolen potatoes back from a mischievous frog who has stolen it. But that’s not as easy as it may sound.
In SOPA - Tale of the Stolen Potato, Miho is a young boy who heads into his grandmother’s pantry to retrieve a sack of potatoes only to come face to face with the aforementioned frog thief. When trying to grab the sack from the frog he is suddenly transported into a fantastical world. And while, at first he’s a little taken aback, soon his mind is back to thinking only about the stolen potato.
What made me first want to play SOPA was its beautiful and fun artstyle and I wasn’t disappointed when I started playing. The world is vibrant, unique and truly alive. And the more you talk with different characters the more you’ll learn about this world and, the closer you’ll get to finding and collecting your potato. As things get more and more ridiculous you’ll likely find yourself falling in love with the game’s quirky cast of characters.
The puzzles in the game aren’t hugely complicated and often involve helping out or doing favors for others. There were a few times that I got stuck and wasn’t sure what to do, but things are simple enough if you talk with everyone and gather hints. But things are made more difficult by the game’s technical issues.
There’s nothing that makes the game unplayable, by any means, but the control themselves are a bit of a mess, there were various audio issues throughout, the animations can skip and stutter at times and I had an issue using my controller which was strange to me as the game recommends playing it with a controller.
SOPA - Tale of the Stolen Potato is a sweet, short adventure about family and soup. And despite its technical issues, it’s well-worth playing just to experience the adorable and silly story.
