Pocket Boss Review | This Chart is Super Accurate, I Promise

We’ve probably all dealt with a bad boss at one of our jobs. Those of us that haven’t - lucky you - but those of us that have will probably be quite familiar with the situation in the new short puzzle game Pocket Boss from developers Langfilm and Mario von Rickenbach.

If you’ve ever worked a job that involved data, then you’ll know that your numbers and statistics don’t always look the way you want them to. Thankfully, in Pocket Boss, you’re able to manipulate the data to increase productivity, boost customer satisfaction and much more. The most important thing as a remote employee is to keep your boss happy and get everything done. And you’ve got quite a lot on your plate.

In the game, you’ll only use your left mouse click in order to solve data-related puzzles as your boss watches you to make sure you don’t screw anything up. It’s up to you to figure out what exactly your boss wants from each chart or graph and make it happen. For example, you can adjust a line graph to show that customer satisfaction is at an all time high by moving each of the data points. Each of your assignments has a different solution whether it’s pie charts, scatter plots, your boss wants you to fix them no matter what it takes.

In between each puzzle, you’ll chat with your boss on the phone and choose how you’d like to respond to the conversation. Feel like being a little cheeky? Sure, why not. Maybe you’ll be a bit more formal with him to maintain a level of professionalism. That’s totally up to you. But, be careful what you choose, you wouldn’t want your responses to affect your possible promotion!

What I enjoyed most about Pocket Boss was that I was laughing a lot. It’s a simple concept - manipulate charts in different ways - but it’s executed with a subtle humor that’s done really well. And at a playtime of around 30 minutes to an hour, it was important for Pocket Boss to make a good first impression and it really does. And it manages to maintain the fun all throughout.

In terms of the puzzles themselves, most are pretty easy to figure out, but there were a few that I found really perplexing and took me quite a while to put together. I do wonder for some of them, if there are multiple ways to solve them. I’d be curious to see someone else play and see if they take on the puzzles the same way that I did. There was also one puzzle/mini-game involving cyber defense that I got frustrated with only because you have to start over from the beginning of the mini-game if you make a mistake. Other than those very minor grievances, I found each puzzle unique and truly fun to solve.

Pocket Boss is a fantastic, short puzzle game that takes the dread of repetitive office work and makes it fun. While dealing with your picky, demanding boss is perhaps too relatable for some of us, it’s a great set up for this title. Whether you like dealing with data or not, Pocket Boss is a great game to pick up if you’re looking for a quick, funny little story with interesting puzzles and a truly ingenious concept.

Final Thoughts

I picked up Pocket Boss and finished it in one sitting, but I wanted to immediately play it again. It made me laugh a lot and that’s always a great indication of something I’ll be going back to. Apart from one or two puzzles that thoroughly confused me and one that frustrated me, the entire experience is a joy and I’ll be recommending it, starting now!
