Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime Preview - There’s Cake in this Cake!
I fell in love with Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime as soon as I watched the trailer. It’s so eye-catching and simply makes you smile. What’s not to love about something like that?
Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime from developer Bonte Avond is an interactive fiction and turn-based strategy game. You play as Bonnie who is feeling pretty down as they don’t have any frogs and, in a world obsessed with frogs, that’s pretty sad. Thankfully, Bonnie’s friends have got their back and players will soon discover a world brimming with not just frogs, but love and fun and joy.
I got the chance to play the game’s demo and pretty much absolutely love it and cannot wait to play the full version. In the demo, Bonnie wakes up on their birthday and their friends give them some wonderful gifts, including a toadbag with frogs for the game of frogtime. This simply act of giving Bonnie a birthday gift sets them and their friends off on a wild adventure to save the archipelago where they live.
Much of the game involves walking around and interacting with Bonnie’s friends or others that live on the archipelago. I met a handful of characters during the demo, each with their own unique personality and voice-acting that is made up of some improvisations, first-takes and imperfections. It’s a simple choice that makes the game even that much more endearing.
You’ll be able to challenge friends to play Frogtime during the game. Frogtime is pretty simple. You have a board made up of squares. You’ll plant your frogs on one side while your opponent will do the same on their side. Each frog moves in different ways depending on the type. Your goal is to get all of your frogs to the other side of the board first. I only collected a handful of frogs during the demo, but you’ll be able to collect over 40 different kinds of frogs in the full game in order to craft your perfect frog deck.
Like I said, I can’t wait to play the full version of Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime. I’ve never played a game from Bonte Avond before but the rest of the Six One Indie crew sings praises for their previous titles Once Upon a Jester and Everybody Wham Wham so I have no doubt that this will be an adventure I won’t soon forget.
