Graytail Demo Preview

Mystery is where my adventure with Graytail begins and ends. In the deepening night, rain clatters loudly to the ground outside. My dimly lit detective’s office looks classically noir, though brought to life in a refreshing 2.5D pixel style.

My head is killing me and a sudden wailing from the phone nearby does nothing to ease it. I pick it up to a voice identifying itself as a doctor. A doctor? Have I been to the hospital? Will my screen-splitting symptoms get worse? How many times has the Dr. been to my office? Should I take the medicine as he urges?

This last question isn’t rhetorical. I face my first dilemma of the demo. Trying not to think too much about it, I slid the pills down my throat. The world glitches and blinks out for a moment before Sophie comes in.

The young woman, unaware of my recent break with reality, is a client looking for her mother, a famous pilot whose plane had inexplicably gone missing. Almost as soon as I take on the case, I’m off on a boat to lands unknown.

This is where the game’s flavor begins to simmer to the surface. Unlike the detective fantasy I’ve experienced so far, the main action is more akin to Indiana Jones, with a little Breath of the Wild sprinkled in.

The Zelda influence is first invoked with the discovery of a new recipe. I can’t tell you how big a smile spread across my face as I realized the herbs I’d gathered while blazing my trail to a village could become ingredients in different dishes. Unfortunately, my first culinary creation was a failed dish, better discarded than eaten. But I’ll happily try again later, after gaining more ingredients.

The village is odd. The people seem unperturbed by items going missing, characters acting bizarrely, and monsters roaming just outside their gates. That’s no matter. I’m a detective on the case. So, outside the safety of the village I go.

And I walk right into a hidden temple; would you believe it? Battling everything from hostile flowers and antagonizing fish, I stumble over something that lights up my spirit: A Torch. This new tool in my toolbelt lets me get through flammable crates that previously blocked my progress. I also take great joy in discovering I can set the grass on fire. I set a lot of grass on fire.

Zelda-esque environmental puzzle challenged how I use my torch and club-like cane while I work my way through a waterlogged ruin. Finally, by activating three scattered switches, I drain the temple enough to enter the main door. This hides a new skill – a kind of dash-meets-roll. Showing off its Indy-inspired campy fun, part of my journey from here takes place on inflatable inner tubes that zoom through an ancient water slide.

My ride terminates in a boss battle which uses every part of my increased arsenal. After dodging wildly, using fire and force, I watched the charred corpse of the giant octopus I’d just beaten sink beneath the waves.

It should have been a moment of celebration, but my reality-blurring headache returns. What I think I see is dire, and when I come to, I’m back in the village. Alone. With a nearby phone ringing.

It’s the doctor.

He wants to know if I’ve taken my medicine. Alarmed, I demand how he knew I was even here and how he could be calling. He acts concerned for my failing memory and again the game asks me if I want to take the pills he’s prescribed. I refused three times, to no avail. So, I allow the medicines to slither down my gullet like a venomous snake. And with that, my Graytail preview was over, though my curiosity is far from ended.

This preview looks very promising. The art style and atmosphere immediately stand out, and it's always exciting to see indie developers bring fresh ideas to the genre. I enjoy discovering unique gaming experiences, whether it's a story-driven title like this or a quick session of golf hit unblocked. Looking forward to seeing how Graytail develops.
