Dust off your college party skills in a game for your life in Death Pong. Following in the footsteps of Buckshot Roulette and CloverPit, I got a taste of a dingy, dark twist of beer pong. In Death Pong, you wake up in a dive bar with a debt to pay. The bartender Gustav offers you an opportunity to clear this debt, but from his glowing eyes to two illuminated counters, things immediately feel off.
Death Pong brings beer pong to a digital space, and it’s not easy. You control aim direction and throw height. If your opponent, who has equally terrifying glowing eyes, beats you in a round, you are treated to a heaping dose of electricity. The deadly tournament continues until one of you loses a total of three games. There are various factors that make each run unique and challenging such as cup arrangement, drunkenness, timer, and shots in between rounds that may shift the odds in or against your favor.
Between the three rounds, Gustav offers you three random shots to choose from, but beware, these boons usually come at a cost. Examples include Zombie Brain, which allows a second chance but increases drunkenness, Enigma, which allows three positive or negative effects at complete random, Rainbow Shot, which adds 15 seconds to the timer but also adds some drunkenness, Druid’s Crucible, which gives you a chance to instantly win a round but also a chance to lose your next three turns, Brudershaft, which adds drunkenness to you and your enemy, and Detox, which removes all your drunkenness. It’s wild; it’s chaotic, but it allows you to adapt and strategize.
The overall atmosphere, on one hand, reminds me of the party scenes of yesteryear, but it also sets a tone that will leave you feeling uneasy with each loss. The bystanders mock you, the music thrums with suspense, and yet, after each failure, I was eager to dust off my pants and try just one more time. The roguelite nature allows you to strategize your approach for each round of a game, and each game is never the same. Try your skills at Death Pong at your own risk!
