If your life were at stake, would you take a gamble? In Black Jacket, you have been taken to the underworld, seemingly having died. But the ferryman can be bribed to return you to your previous life. All you need is some Soul coins. And the way to earn those is to play blackjack, of course! Not that this is a regular game of blackjack: in this roguelike deckbuilder, you can build insane combos, take control of your opponent’s deck, and just bend the rules in general. Do you have what it takes to claw your way back to life?

When you arrive in the underworld, you are greeted by Reed, a friendly soul who seems to be set on helping you. Once you beat them at a game of blackjack, you are thrown into the typical roguelike ladder you might recognize from games like Slay the Spire. Collect new cards, burn others, shop around, and customize your deck to become your ultimate weapon. You’ll need it if you are to take on each floor’s bosses, who come with their own set of rules.

Your enemies aren’t just nameless monsters though. Even regular opponents have names and their own backstories. By playing them in run after run, you’ll uncover their stories, and their curses. Learn how they play the game, and deepen your relationship with them to break the cycle. Some will earn your sympathy more easily than others, but all of them deserve a chance to be known. They all ended up here just like you, and have their own motivations to be playing blackjack.

Black Jacket is an awesome take on the roguelike deckbuilder genre, combining the best elements of something like the aforementioned Slay the Spire and the similarly iconic Balatro. It will have you coming back for more after each run, with different card suits to unlock, a variety of artifact combinations and plenty of adjustable difficulty settings. It’s a fiendishly more-ish experience, with gameplay being quick and swift enough to get you to play just one more run, time and time again.

While gameplay is the standout feature of the game, the presentation more than deserves a mention as well. The artwork is simply beautiful to look at: you only get to see your opponents through their hands, but they all tell a story, just like your surroundings. Black Jacket is fully voice-acted as well, adding even more layers to its intrigue. There’s clearly plenty of history to this game’s (under)world, and being drip-fed information about it works beautifully.

So, are you willing to bet away your chance at restoring your life? Can you help out those who share your fate? And just how far are you willing to bend the rules to get what you want? Discover it all for yourself as Black Jacket is out now on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

It’s rare to see a deckbuilder give so much personality and sympathy to its bosses, moving far beyond the simple hidden-identity mechanics you usually find in a casual session of Among Us Online
