Usual June Preview

Usual June from Developer Finji is an upcoming action-adventure hack and slash that follows June on her summer break that goes a bit…well, spooky. In the game’s demo which I played as part of LudoNarraCon, June joins her friend Sunny as they investigate a mysterious location looking for someone called “Dead Teddy.”

Thankfully, June is able to see Teddy and can also speak to him. Teddy tells her that he needs help getting home and, after a quick click of a switch, both June and Teddy are teleported to Teddy’s home. His home has a very science fiction, overgrown forest feel to it and is even haunted by a terrifying entity that keeps calling for him. June swears that she’ll help Teddy before getting out of there.

You’ll encounter a few different types of enemies as you follow Teddy around looking for the exit. They look like large robot bugs that you can wail on with June’s sword-like weapon. You’ll also be able to use items during battle like walls that you can place in the middle of the fighting area to trip up your enemies. You can dodge and dash around to give yourself an advantage until you’ve killed everything in the area.

Usual June’s combat felt pretty smooth and I loved the little detail of the enemies changing colors to represent how much damage they had taken. Things get a bit frantic when you’re fighting a large group of enemies at one time, but if you take a quick breather, June will get all of her health back.

The demo for the game ended just before what I imagine could be a boss battle so I can’t wait to be able to get back into the game when it releases (hopefully) later this year. If you’re a fan of the hack and slash genre, this is one to keep an eye out for.

Usual June is available to wishlist on Steam right now.
