PancitoMerge Review | Cookie + Cookie = Bread

Merge games aren’t a genre that I know a lot about. I can’t even say that I’ve really dabbled in them before, but something about PancitoMerge from developers Fáyer and Sketchy Ceviche piqued my interest and I’ve been super excited for its release. And I haven’t been disappointed as I’ve played the game’s three levels again and again.

The gameplay for PancitoMerge is very simple. When you load into the game, you’ll have a baked good that shows up at the top of the screen. You’ll drop it to the bottom of the screen with the goal of merging two of the same item together to make a new item. Your ultimate goal is to merge your baked goods until you’ve unlocked every possible item for that level. But things get difficult pretty quickly.

Most of the time, with each merge, your baked goods will get larger and larger. With only a small amount of space in your “basket,” it can quickly get difficult to hold everything. You’ll hit a game over if your baked goods reach the top of the screen and get stuck there. Thankfully, there are helpful ways to try and help yourself avoid that result.

Every few times that you drop a new item into the basket, a customer will show up at your window requesting something. What they want is always totally random, but it can sometimes mean the difference between a game over and another chance. Additionally, PancitoMerge allows you to occasionally shake your basket, just a little bit, which also managed to save me more than a few times.

The game features three levels: La Tradicional, Dia de Muertos and JapoMexa. Each of these levels has their own set of unique baked goods for you to merge, as well as new customers to meet. Before starting a match, the game will show you your high score for your previous attempt as well as how many baked goods you managed to unlock.

I did run into a couple of minor technical issues while I played the game. Once or twice I had a few of my items simply disappear from my basket after merging. And there was one time that the game froze and wouldn’t allow me to drop anymore items so I had to start my level over. These are things that I’m sure will be resolved within the first few days of the game’s launch, but either way, they did very little to affect my enjoyment of the game.

PancitoMerge may just be the game that makes me fall in love with merge games. I love that the seemingly simple gameplay gets more and more difficult with every new merge and I really enjoyed the differences between each of the game’s three levels. If you’re prepared to be constantly craving cookies and bread, this is one you’ll want to add to your library.

Final Thoughts

I’ve already poured over five hours into PancitoMerge. It may not seem like a game you could do that with as there are only three levels, but mastering the art of merging these baked goods together is more complicated than you think! With only a few minor technical issues, lovers of merge games will find a warm and yummy home with this one.
