Mullet Mad Jack Preview: I Dare You to Insult His Mullet

To say that Mullet Mad Jack is a wild experience, would be so much of an understatement I’m just going to go ahead and not say that.

Business in the Front, Party in the Back

Mullet Mad Jack from developer HAMMER95 is a fast-paced first-person shooter inspired by classic anime and in just the 30 minute demo it currently has available on Steam, it manages to impress in every way. From its eye-catching visuals to its frantic but super easy to learn gameplay, this title is strange, wacky, wild and I can’t wait to see what the full game has in store.

You play as Mullet MadJack and your goal is to kill as many enemies as you can, never letting more than 10 seconds pass between each kill. What happens if you do? Well, you die. Pretty metal, huh? It is the year 2090 and the world is ruled by rich A.I. robots cleverly called ROBILLIONARIES. Those that put their 10 seconds of life on the line are called Moderators and are tasked with running through randomly-generated stages with constantly changing enemies and obstacles to overcome with the ultimate goal of saving the beautiful anime princess.

The game puts players into a first-person perspective as they dash their way through shooting, slashing and kicking any enemy that dares to get in their way. The more players progress the more weapon options they’ll unlock. Players that find themselves needing more time can stop by soda machines, scattered around each level to gain a few precious seconds but no more than ten. Players can also perform finisher moves which are epic one-hit kills.

Upgrade With Some Extra Hairspray

Finishing each run won’t be easy though since things ramp up the farther you go. Thankfully, there are upgrades available at the end of each floor. Upgrades can give players more powerful weapons, an extra few seconds on their timers and much more. And you’ll especially need those upgrades to defeat the powerful bosses at the end of each run. Mullet Mad Jack’s demo version included two bosses that offer a much more difficult battle than the regular enemies encountered in each level.

The most eye-catching and exciting element that makes Mullet Mad Jack stand out (You know, other than the robots and the guns and everything else) is its art style. Inspired by anime from the 80’s and 90’s, the game really does feel like jumping into Akira or Ghost in the Shell. The colors, UI, and voice acting are all immaculate, making it a true trip down nostalgia lane.

The full version of Mullet Mad Jack includes 50+ powerups, an endless mode and a leisure mode for players that want a more relaxed feel to their mayhem. The game also boasts a variety of accessibility features including full controller support, key remapping, and the ability to adjust certain settings including mouse sensitivity, camera shake, flashing and much more.

Final Thoughts

Mullet Mad Jack’s current demo is an incredibly fun experience and gives players the perfect glimpse of what to expect in the full game. If you’re a fan of fast-paced mayhem, anime and robots (and who isn't’?) then any minute you’re not trying out this demo is a minute wasted. With no release date yet, we’re going to be aggressively watching our wishlist’s waiting for its release.
