Lost in Space - The Adventure Game Preview: Listen to Your Parents

It’s time to grab your best tie dye t-shirt and gear up to jump back to the 60s in this blast from the past adventure game!

Lost in Space - The Adventure Game is an upcoming point and click adventure where you play as Will Robinson, Dr. Zachary Smith, and Robot- three beloved characters from the 1960’s television series Lost in Space. After not listening to his father (friggin kids!) and exploring a dangerous cave at night, Will Robinson gets trapped. When he returns, after some clever problem solving, he finds that the rest of the crew of the Jupiter 2, including his parents, have gone missing. Players will have to team up with Dr. Smith and Robot to find and save his family.

Designed to be the spiritual “fourth season” of the show, players will feel as though they’ve jumped right into the 60’s as Developer Scary Robot has included a huge amount of detail to the game. From actual dialogue taken directly from the show to the show’s original music, this truly is a recreation made for both fans or those completely new to the series.

In the game’s current demo, which took me about 20 minutes to beat, you play as Will Robinson as he tries to escape from a cave he got himself trapped in after his father told him not to. Like many classic point and click games, Lost in Space involves moving your character around and picking up items that can be used or combined together to solve puzzles and help your character progress.

The gameplay highlighted in the current demo feels a little bit convoluted, having players grab and utilize properties of different cave crystals in order to escape the cave. Movement itself is smooth enough but some mechanics, such as having to move a ladder back and forth around the cave, can be frustrating. I’m looking forward to seeing more puzzles and how they’ll play out in the full version of the game especially with this retro sci-fi backdrop, Will Robinson and co. are sure to get up to some fun shenanigans.

Players that enjoy a more laid back experience don’t need to worry because Lost in Space features a couple of different options for changing things up. Find yourself stuck? The game boasts a multi-tiered help system to make it so players never get stuck on one puzzle for too long. Additionally, if you’d rather enjoy this spiritual fourth season hands-off, you can turn on movie mode and enjoy the game as a non-interactive cinematic experience.

Lost in Space - The Adventure Game is clearly a love letter to fans of the original series. Bringing the original dialogue and music from the show, truly shows how dedicated Scary Robot are to creating a nostalgic and enjoyable experience. If you’re a fan of point and click titles, you’ll feel right at home here.
