Interview with the Developer of Truth Scrapper

As huge fans of In Stars and Time we were beyond excited to have insertdisc5 include Truth Scrapper in our May showcase. Truth Scrapper is totally different and we can’t wait to play it and see what stories these characters have to tell.

A huge thank you to insertdisc5 for answering my questions about the game.

  • Can you tell me more about you and how the idea for Truth Scrapper came about?

I loved exploring the concept of memories and the importance we give them in In Stars and Time, and I wanted to explore that in more detail. What are the things we decide to remember? What are the things we’d rather forget?

  • What made you decide to create a visual novel this time around?

Some mean and evil people said In Stars and Time had just too much dialogue for an RPG. OK!!!! THEN I’LL DO A VISUAL NOVEL AKA THE DIALOGUE GENRE AND NO ONE CAN SAY ANYTHING (and also I like writing things).

  • Who makes up the Truth Scrappers guild and how did Sosotte join them?

Well now answering most of that would be a spoiler. All I can say is that Truth Scrappers are a guild of researchers, and each of them is here to forget.

  • Can you give a little detail about how gameplay works in Truth Scrapper? It is a visual novel where your memories reset at the end of each day so how do you make progress?

Each day, Sosotte’s memories get reset, and she starts every morning not even remembering her name. By touching her Scrap Book, a journal filled with her memories, she can remember whatever she wrote down throughout her life. Every day, the player will be able to remember three things, and Sosotte will carry that knowledge forward. The memories the player chooses will impact her relationships with characters, but also the clues she picks up on, and even the way she looks at the world. Those memories might be observations about the world, about Sosotte’s wellbeing, or perhaps even positive or negative impressions about the two attractive guides Sosotte is traveling with…

  • Can you tell me more about the role that Amour and Betz play in the game?

Amour and Betz are here to guide Sosotte through the Dwell, a cave at the bottom of a massive sinkhole. They are also here to be cute <3

  • Truth Scrapper has branching storylines and multiple endings. How long can players expect to spend with a game? Will this be a shorter adventure or will they be able to spend a few hours discovering each of the game’s endings?

In classic visual novel fashion, both Amour and Betz have Good Endings you need to unlock, which will then unlock the True Ending. Each path has hours of unique play time, so you’ll see a lot of different things depending on the memories you choose to have Sosotte remember! I think players can expect to spend at least 15 hours in this world. But also I thought my previous game would be 10 hours and it ended up being 20 so what do I know.

  • What lessons did you learn while creating In Stars and Time that have helped you while working on Truth Scrapper?

Did you know taking breaks is good for you?

  • What does “indie” mean to you?

What a loaded question. Do you want me to die?!?!

Truth Scrapper is available to wishlist on Steam now.
