Constance Demo Preview | Painting Like a Professional

Ever since I started Hollow Knight: Silksong (and got ruthlessly destroyed about 20 hours in and gave up on it), I’ve been looking for other games that might scratch that same itch. I’ve been following Constance from developer btf for quite a while and was excited to jump into it. Not only was I impressed, but I really wanted to keep going beyond what was available in the demo. 

In the game you play as the titular Constance, who is equipped with a large paint brush that she can use to take down enemies. And you’ll encounter quite a few different types of enemies during the demo. Some are easy to defeat and others will require you to utilize some of your paintbrush’s other unique abilities. In one section of the game, you’ll come across electrified blockades and Constance can use her paintbrush to briefly make them disappear to allow you to pass by them. 

The gameplay for Constance is silky smooth in terms of combat and platforming. There may be small spaces that look as though you couldn't possibly fit through, but Constance is able to briefly turn into a puddle of paint to squeeze into or past tight spaces. The full game promises even more unlockable abilities as you explore the game, and you will be able to upgrade these abilities to make them even more powerful. 

Just like most Metroidvania’s, Constance has a non-linear interconnected world that encourages exploration. Players will uncover many secrets as well as NPC’s that will point them in certain directions but the path is yours to choose. Death isn’t the end, and you’ll be able to choose different paths if one proves to be too challenging at first attempt.

Constance is a gorgeous and fun Metroidvania and I’m really looking forward to playing  more of it later this year. If you enjoy games like Hollow Knight, you’ll find a happy home here. And while Constance is reminiscent of other games in the genre, even just a glimpse at the demo shows how unique it is shaping up to be.
