CHILDREN OF SATURN Preview | R.I.P Mr. Rat

As teenagers, many of us wished we could be anywhere but at home. Especially for those of us who lived in small towns, it sometimes felt like everyone would always know who we were and we could never escape. CHILDREN OF SATURN from Boie Tomsen and Nils Schulze encapsulates that feeling we had as teenagers and, despite its demo being quite short, makes an impression that will have players instantly wanting to play more.

CHILDREN OF SATURN is a found footage coming-of-age story about a group of teenagers wanting to find their place in the world. The game has the classic VHS style to it complete with grittiness and muted colors. It’s first person, and has you capturing the lives of you and your friends as you go out on adventures with an, as to be expected, fu*k off attitude.

The demo introduces players to a few of the characters in the game and lets you tag your first billboard with whatever you like. You’re equipped with spray paint in multiple colors and you can truly do whatever you’d like to the billboard. Wanna write “f you mom!”? Do it. Wanna draw a picture of a rat just for the heck of it? Sure. And the best part is, once you’ve completed your masterpiece, you’ll be able to see it from multiple different angles during the rest of the demo.

And that’s one of the main mechanics of the game. Your choices affect the world around you. You’ll see how everything that you do will leave an impression. You’re only given a glimpse of this in the demo, but I’m excited to see how more of these choices affect the world during the full game.

CHILDREN OF SATURN is shaping up to be a really unique adventure full of heart, nostalgia, and dead rat poking. Yes, you read that right. You can wishlist the game on Steam now to stay up to date on future news and check out the demo for yourself while you’re there.
